Ferrum Backgrounds
The lands of Ferrum support a few unique Backgrounds that are outside of the standard offerings of 5th edition. Many of these backgrounds will tie your character to one or more existing organizations that exist in the Nine Nations. By doing so, they give you small perks when you are interecting with members of those organizations.
If you would like to take any background presented here, please be sure to discuss the choice with the DM. I will need to be clear on your affliations in order to have you and the rest of the party properly interact with these and other organizations. Some of these backgrounds will be considered to be allowed for only one character per group - so if anything interests you, be sure to let me know as soon as possible.
High Noble
You were born into one of the elite families of the Ironclast Empire. Your birth charges you with a certain level of authority across the empire, and demands respect from the commonfolk. Your status makes live easier in the Empire (but provides no benfit elsewhere).
High Noble Traits
Ability Boosts. As a high noble, you can choose a +1 Bonus to any Ability Score of your choice.
Skill Proficiency. Your choice of two of the following: History, Insight, Persuasion
Equipment. a set of fine clothes, a belt pouch containing 150 gp
Feature: Noble Status
Your status allows you to always be able to find suitable lodging while in any city or town of the Ironclast Empire. Wherever you decide to stay, they always charge you less than normal.
Feature: High Born
Your birth as a high noble makes life easier. You have Advantage on all Charisma Skill Checks made when dealing with Ironborns of you status or lower. You also never have Disadvantage on Charisma Skill Checks when interacting with any Ironborn citizen.
Kagaku-jin
You have decdicated some portion of your life to the study of the Arashijin practice of Kagaku. You understand the mechanics of the world and have a keen eye for details. You enojy the analysis of new things, and are attracted to the idea of learning and information. A book of lore or interesting mechanics is much more interesting than some magical weapons or spellbook.
Kagaku-jin Traits
Ability Boosts. As a Kagaku-jin, you can choose a +1 Bonus to either Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma.
Skill Proficiency. Investigation & Perception
Languages. Two of your choice
Feature: Quick Study
When being required to make a skill check that you are not proficient in, if another creature first demonstartes a successful check for that skill, you gain Advantage on any attempt to recreate what they did for the next minute.
Legacy
As a character with the Legacy Background, you come from a long line of Shepherds. Likely either your mother or father (or both) were proud members of the organization in the past and served the Corps well. The Shepherds have always been known to treat their members well, and that includes extendings certain benefits and privilages to children that wish to follow in their parents footsteps. You are often promoted easier among the Shepherds' ranks and are extended a few fringe benefits as part of your affliation with them.
Legacy Traits
Ability Boosts. As a legacy, you can choose a +1 Bonus to any Ability Score of your choice.
Skill Proficiency. Your choice of two of the following: Acrobatics, Athletics, Investigation, Medicine, Perception, or Survival
Languages. Two of your choice
Equipment. A legacy insignia, a gaming set of your choice, a set of fine clothes, a belt pouch containing 15 gp
Feature: Rank Advancement
You lineage means you are treated better than other of your rank by the Shepherds' Corps. You gain the privilages of the Rank above your own at all times, allowing you earlier access to certain features and benefits of the Corps.
Sylphe
You were born as one of the Sylphe. You have spent a large portion of your life adhering to the tenants of Adhrasnadar, and worshipping or serving the Fey creatures of the world. You have a deep respect for and understanding of the natural world, and how your actions and the actions of others harm or help the world around you. You likely don't eat meat.
Sylphe Traits
Ability Boosts. As a Sylphe, you can choose a +1 Bonus to Wisdom or Intelligence.
Skill Proficiency. Your choice of two of the following: Medicine, Nature, Perception, or Survival
Languages. Sylvan
Feature: Fey Familiarity
You have interacted many times with the fey and understand their various ways. You have Advantage on all Wisdom, Intelligence, and Charisma Checks made when interacting with Fey creatures, objects, or ideas. You also have Advantage on all Wisdom, Intelligence, and Charisma Saves made to resist Fey spells or abilities.
